What negative means

Draw a line from the inner corner, next to the nose, to the outer corner, toward the ear. If the outer end is lower in a front-facing photo, the angle is negative. Clinical photogrammetry has measured that inclination against a horizontal built from the facial midline, not against the edge of the picture.[1]

On this site an average below −2° is labeled negative, and an average from −2° through +2° is near level. A reading of −1.5° is still a negative direction. The band only stops a tiny error from flipping the label.

Can a photo make it look negative?

Yes. The two frames below use the same eye. Only the head roll changes. The face-relative angle stays put. The angle against the photo edge does not. Camera height, pitch, yaw, and expression can move it too.

What it does not mean

A negative degree is not a health finding, a personality type, or a score. “Downturned” is a looser description of the lid and can include shape this angle does not capture. The number does not describe the crease, the iris, or the brow.

−0.5° and −1° should not be treated as a finding. Landmark placement and a slight lean can move a result by that much. Read the signed number, then the quality mark.

What can change, and what cannot

Makeup, brows, and camera setup change the photograph. They do not move the lateral canthal tendon. Exercises, massage, and mewing do not have reliable evidence for changing that geometry. Surgery is a separate medical decision.

What can and cannot change a negative canthal tilt

Appearance forums sometimes treat the angle as a status word.[1] That usage is separate from the measurement.

Do I have negative canthal tilt?

Measure a front-facing photo on this page. Negative direction means the outer corner is lower than the inner corner. A result such as −1.5° is still a negative direction even when the display band says near level.

Is negative canthal tilt bad?

No. It is a geometric description of two points on a photograph. It is not a judgment of health, personality, intelligence, or worth.

Does canthal tilt say anything about IQ or personality?

No. There is no reliable basis for treating an eye-corner angle as an IQ test or a personality test. The clinical photogrammetry we cite uses the angle to describe eye position, not cognition.

Can a photo make the tilt look more negative?

Yes. Camera height, pitch, yaw, roll, and expression can change the apparent angle. A rejected pose is more useful than a precise number from a bad photo.
