The angle

What is canthal tilt?

Canthal tilt is the angle between two points: the inner corner of the eye and the outer corner. The angle is signed. Positive means the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner. Negative means it sits lower. Near zero, the corners are close to level.

The reference is the face, not the edge of the photo. A slight lean of the head is removed first. One front-facing photo is enough. The number describes geometry. It is not a beauty score, and it is not a target.

Method

How we measure it

We correct mild head roll before measuring each eye.

  1. 01Find the eye cornersThe inner corner sits by the nose. The outer corner sits toward the ear.
  2. 02Level the faceA small lean of the head is taken out before the angle is read.
  3. 03Measure each eyeLeft and right are read on their own, then averaged.
  4. 04Check the pointsIf a marker misses the corner, drag it into place.

Position

Why the photo has to be level

A camera below the chin, or a head turned to the side, changes the picture. Mild roll is corrected. A large turn is rejected instead of being guessed away.

Hold the camera at eye level, look straight ahead, and keep both corners visible.

Same eye rolled 0.0° in the photo. Face-relative angle stays +4.0°. Photo-edge reading is +4.0°.

Left and right can differ

The report names your left eye and your right eye. A difference of a degree or two can be the face, the photo, or both. It is not automatically something to correct.

What a published average is

Clinical photographs have measured this angle against a horizontal built from the facial midline.[1] A mean from one sample belongs to that sample. It is not a personal target, and this site does not rank angles. The landmarks come from MediaPipe Face Landmarker, loaded only after you start a measurement.[2]

Questions

What is canthal tilt?

Canthal tilt is the angle of the line between the inner and outer corners of the eye relative to a horizontal reference.

How is canthal tilt measured?

This tool finds the inner and outer eye corners, removes head roll, and reports the angle of each eye plus the average. You can drag the four points if the automatic placement is off.

What is a positive canthal tilt?

Positive means the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner. It describes direction, not attractiveness.

What is a negative canthal tilt?

Negative means the outer corner sits lower than the inner corner. It is a geometric description, not a verdict.

Can head angle affect the result?

Yes. Looking up, down, or sideways changes the photo. Mild head roll is corrected. Large yaw or pitch is rejected so the tool does not invent a precise number.

Can the left and right eyes differ?

Yes. The report lists your left eye, your right eye, and the difference between them.

Is canthal tilt the same as eye shape?

No. Canthal tilt is one angle. Eye shape also includes eyelid exposure, spacing, and the outline of the opening. Those are separate measurements.
